What is the Practical Nursing program?

This program prepares students to meet the licensure requirements for Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), as established by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners (LSBPNE).  The program consists of classroom instruction, lab practicum and supervised clinical activities in accredited hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care agencies.  Upon successful completion of the program, the student is awarded a diploma and is eligible to apply to take the National Council of State Boards Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

Program Objectives:

  • Providing students with hands-on clinical experience at local healthcare facilities

Career Options for Graduates of the Practical Nursing Program:

  • Hospitals: LPNs can work in various departments within a hospital, such as medical-surgical units, intensive care units, or rehabilitation centers. In these settings, LPNs may be responsible for administering medications, collecting vital signs, and assisting with patient care tasks.
  • Nursing homes: LPNs can work in nursing homes or assisted living facilities, providing care for older adults or those with chronic health conditions. In these settings, LPNs may be responsible for tasks such as assisting with activities of daily living, administering medications, and providing wound care.
  • Home healthcare agencies: LPNs can work for home healthcare agencies, providing care to patients in their own homes. In these settings, LPNs may be responsible for administering medications, collecting vital signs, and providing patient education.
  • Outpatient clinics: LPNs can also work in outpatient clinics, where they may be responsible for administering medications, collecting vital signs, and providing patient education.
